POSSE Foundation Scholars

Two students were awarded full-tuition POSSE Scholarships. One student received a scholarship to Sewanee: The University of the South, recognized for exceptional leadership and academic excellence. Another student is a recipient of the POSSE Scholarship to Lewis & Clark College, exemplifying commitment to community engagement and scholastic achievement. The POSSE Foundation partners with universities to provide full-tuition scholarships and foster supportive communities.

Stephen Joel Trachtenberg (SJT) Scholars

Two students were awarded the prestigious SJT Scholarship, granting them full, four-year scholarships to George Washington University. This comprehensive scholarship covers tuition, room and board, books, and fees. It recognizes outstanding D.C. public high school seniors for their significant academic achievements and leadership qualities, supporting their educational journey at GW.

Gates Millennium Scholar

One student was honored with the highly competitive Gates Millennium Scholarship. This award provides full funding for undergraduate education and potential graduate studies. The scholarship supports exceptional minority students who demonstrate significant financial need and academic promise, enabling them to pursue higher education without financial burden.

Public Safety Career Pathways

MPD Police Cadet Program

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Police Cadet Program is designed for D.C. high school graduates ages 17–24 who aspire to become full-time police officers.

Cadets are employed by MPD while attending college full-time at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), with tuition and books fully covered.

Participants receive:

  • Paid on-the-job training
  • Mentorship from sworn officers
  • A direct pathway to becoming a sworn MPD officer after program completion

Several Dunbar graduates have completed this program and are now active-duty firefighters and emergency medical personnel, proudly serving their city.

DC Fire and EMS Cadet Program

The DC Fire and EMS (DCFD) Cadet Program is a rigorous 18-month, paid apprenticeship that prepares young adults to become certified Firefighter/EMTs in the District of Columbia.

Cadets earn:

  • EMT and Firefighter I & II certifications
  • A full-time salary and benefits during training
  • Guaranteed employment with DCFD upon graduation and successful certification
  • Several Dunbar graduates have completed this program and are now active-duty firefighters and emergency medical personnel, proudly serving their city.
